The 18 Card Challenge - Role-Playing Game

Posted by george tagmire on

Hey Designers, guess what's back... The 18 Card Challenge!  Before we start let me introduce myself. I'm George, Jason's brother. A few weeks ago I started helping him out with Button Shy. One of the thing's we discussed was getting the 18 Card Challenge back up and running. My plan is to assist with organizing the contest, judging the games and work with Marty Cobb and Jason on the results. The 18 Card Challenge - Worker Placement

Posted by Jason Tagmire on

It's time for a new challenge. We had two in mind. One was easy, one was hard. We went with the hard. Sorry! JUNE/JULY CHALLENGE: Create an 18 card worker placement game. First lets define a worker placement game: REDDIT: A mechanic where players have a number of available tokens, usually referred to as "workers", and take turns assigning them to different "action" spaces. This is a wild adventure of a series. This week we announced the winner, runners up, and bonus stars for the Identical Card Challenge, then we closed the submissions for the No Table Challenge, and now it's time for the next one already. The November Challenge is one intended to give everyone a little breathing room and explore something thematic instead of intensely restrictive mechanics for the 3rd month in a row. :) NOVEMBER CHALLENGE: Create an 18 card game based on a real life location.   Additional explanation: We consider a real life location a specific building, park, street,...

18 Card Challenge - Design Time

Posted by Mike Mullins on

Jason is at Spiel, but he would like me to remind you that my opinions are my own, and do not actually constitute Button Shy policies. Also he wanted me to tell you that I am very smart and handsome. His words, not mine. Welcome back! This is the third article about the 18 Card Challenge. I've described our judging process, talked about pitch videos, and now it's time to dive into the actual game design bit. I'll be including advice from some of the other judges, answering some questions from Twitter and Discord, and hopefully helping you craft a better...
