The 18 Card Challenge - November - Design a game based on a real life location

Posted by Jason Tagmire on

This is a wild adventure of a series. This week we announced the winner, runners up, and bonus stars for the Identical Card Challenge, then we closed the submissions for the No Table Challenge, and now it's time for the next one already. The November Challenge is one intended to give everyone a little breathing room and explore something thematic instead of intensely restrictive mechanics for the 3rd month in a row. :) NOVEMBER CHALLENGE: Create an 18 card game based on a real life location.   Additional explanation: We consider a real life location a specific building, park, street,...

18 Card Challenge - Design Time

Posted by Mike Mullins on

Jason is at Spiel, but he would like me to remind you that my opinions are my own, and do not actually constitute Button Shy policies. Also he wanted me to tell you that I am very smart and handsome. His words, not mine. Welcome back! This is the third article about the 18 Card Challenge. I've described our judging process, talked about pitch videos, and now it's time to dive into the actual game design bit. This doesn't need to be the end of the road for games that didn't make it. We encourage you to keep designing and keep challenging yourself. Maybe this is the spark for something bigger? Maybe you've started on a new design and will come back to this in time? It's all forward movement and very awesome. If you want to know why some of these made it (and deduce why others...

18 Card Challenge - Here Comes the Judge

Posted by Mike Mullins on

Note: Mike is a frequent collaborator and has judged many of our design contests, but his opinions remain his own. Odds are pretty good he knows what he's talking about, but nothing in his columns constitutes official Button Shy policy.  - Jason What's All This Then? Welcome gamers, designers, and friends, to the first in a series of posts taking a closer look at the 18 Card Challenge. After viewing 228 entries for the September contest alone, I realized I had quite a few pieces of advice for future entrants.  Once I'd made up my mind to write something,  I took...
