We’re pleased to announce that GenCant and Button Shy Games are back, after the huge success of the 2018 contest (which resulted in both Tussie Mussie and Seasons of Rice), with a new challenge for GenCant 2022.
GenCant is an “unconventional unconvention” created to bring some gaming thrills to folks who cannot attend Gen Con. The winner of the 2022 challenge will become the official game of GenCant 2022 and be made available for people to print-and-play at home during the event - and published by Button Shy as part of their product line.
CREATE AN 18 CARD FLIP AND WRITE GAME
Flip and write game - Very similar to roll-and-write-games these games use different cards to determine symbols and/or numbers. The results are marked on sheets of paper or erasable boards by the players.
Some notable examples are: Cartographers, Welcome To..., Hadrian’s Wall, Silver & Gold, Metro X and many more.
We’re looking for an 18 card design that uses flip and write as a main mechanic. For the write portion, designers can design a single 4” x 3” sheet that each player will use.
Timeline
Initial Submissions will be accepted from Monday May 17, 2022 until Sunday July 17 at 23:59 PT.
Winner will be announced Wednesday August 3, 2022.
Component Limitations
The GenCant 2022 Wallet Game may only use the components listed below:
18 Cards
A 4"x3" single sided scoring/writing sheet (pdf) for players to print and write onto.
Rules (keep your rules to a reasonable length please - the longer, the less fitting for this format)
Pen or pencil
No additional components. Players may not write on cards or cut or modify the cards in any way.
Submission Requirements

- Pitch Video (3 minutes or less): You will need to provide a link to a video elevator pitch of your game. This may also include examples of play. This video can be hosted either on your own site or a public one like YouTube or Vimeo.
- Rules: You will need to provide a link to a complete rules document that is sufficient for a reader to learn to play the game. The rules can be hosted on either your own site, or a public one like Dropbox or Google Drive. Rules do not need to be production-ready formatted.
- Game Description: Including Game Title, Player Count, Estimated Play Time, Recommended Ages (if any), Brief Description of the gameplay and theme (if any).
- Print-And-Play File: A printable file with all of the cards that are used in the game (with back sides if required to play.) The cards should be formatted to poker size (3.5”x2.5”) or as close as possible. A printable file with the writing sheet used in the game. Sheets should be single-sided.

Additional Restrictions
Designs must be original works that do not infringe on any intellectual property. Submission must not be publicly available through any retail, secondary or print-on-demand market and may not be currently under consideration for publication by other publishers.
One submission per entrant.
Designers must be 18 years or older to enter.
While designs need not have final artwork or graphics, they should be complete and usable. All designs remain the intellectual property of the designers.
Prizes
Along with being named the Official Game of GenCant 2022, the winning design will be published as part of the Button Shy Wallet Series of games in 2023. The winning designer will receive a contract and payments through the Button Shy Games contract standards.
All entries may be considered for publication by Button Shy Games. If considered, Button Shy will reach out with an offer as all rights remain with the designers.
